Strangely enough, at least two other comics referenced swans in some manner; they don&#8217;t have anything to do with our PBS moment.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the Ziggy strip.\u00a0 Its creator is Tom Wilson:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/snarkitupfuzzball.nexiliscom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/ziggy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1561\" title=\"ziggy\" src=\"http:\/\/snarkitupfuzzball.nexiliscom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/ziggy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"414\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/snarkitupfuzzball.nexiliscom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/ziggy.jpg 414w, https:\/\/snarkitupfuzzball.nexiliscom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/ziggy-250x243.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 414px) 100vw, 414px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dennis from Comics Curmudgeon wrote: &#8220;I\u2019m a classicist, and so \u201cthe battle of the swans\u201d juxtaposed with the diminutive Ziggy naturally put me in mind of a motif from classical Greek and Latin poetry: the battle of the Cranes and Pygmies. &#8220;.\u00a0 It&#8217;s true! The story is referenced in the <em>Iliad<\/em>.\u00a0 It was evidently a popular tale, and it&#8217;s even reproduced in art of the period:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/snarkitupfuzzball.nexiliscom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/180px-fight_pygmy_crane_man.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1562\" title=\"180px-fight_pygmy_crane_man\" src=\"http:\/\/snarkitupfuzzball.nexiliscom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/180px-fight_pygmy_crane_man.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"155\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is an Attic red-figure <em>chous<\/em>,\u00a0 430\u2013420 BC,\u00a0 in the National Archaeological Museum of Spain.\u00a0 A chous is a jug.\u00a0 Classy, huh?\u00a0 Not much is funnier than a Pygmy.\u00a0 Unless, of course, he&#8217;s riding on a goat, which the story says Pygmies would ride upon when they went to war against the Cranes.\u00a0 Kinda like those little rodeo monkeys that ride on border collies.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, leave it to me to sully classy name of ancient Greek literature and art with a recent acquistion of the Getty &#8212; the Estelle Getty Tea-cup Museum and Motor Lodge:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/snarkitupfuzzball.nexiliscom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/new-ziggy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1563\" title=\"new-ziggy\" src=\"http:\/\/snarkitupfuzzball.nexiliscom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/new-ziggy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"455\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/snarkitupfuzzball.nexiliscom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/new-ziggy.jpg 455w, https:\/\/snarkitupfuzzball.nexiliscom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/new-ziggy-232x250.jpg 232w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 455px) 100vw, 455px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We now return you to <em>WWF Smackdown! <\/em> Thank you, and good night.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 11 December Ziggy had a funny ( [craigferguson] I know!
