Part of the charm of Rex Morgan is the occasional GREAT rendering of a face. Okay, I tend to like the goofy ones (Niki looking like he’s had a 2×4 smacked against the back of his head, escaped felon Lee having a super-deluxe conniption fit, Rex looking puzzled/confused/sad), but this one of Abbey was just perfect. It didn’t help that June was telling Sarah how Abbey doesn’t mind getting her shots. Yeah, right.

Heck, for all I know, Rex might be a yeti under his lab coat. What was under the towel wasn’t clear, even to June. (The original was a Plugger panel, hence the Byzantine title.)

Anyway, I love his incisive mind, and that great “what, me worry?” attitude. He needs to read the fridge a little more often, though.

I might as well catch up to the Rex Morgan story arc, especially since it has derailed a little (or chugged onto a siding), with Abbey (the dog) going to the vet and Becka (the nurse) morphing into an android, or something. Need. more. Count. Morgu! OTOH, a little Dr. Phil goes a long way.

Loramir from CC brought up an interesting point: several characters in several soapy comic strips share the same name.

It’s not like there’s a chance that we’re going to run out of “normal” names anytime soon. And evidently there’s a trend, at least in the U.S., of giving companion animals “human names” rather than traditional names like Fido or Fluffy or Getthehelloffofthat. I don’t know why…I asked a fellow who owned a dachshund, “Henry,” why he’d named the dog that: “Because pet names are stupid.” Okay. For the record, I’ve also known a dachshund by the name of “Daniel,” so maybe it’s a thing with wiener dogs.

Anyway, this is sort of a PSA/field guide to some of the potentially-confusing character names in our favorite soaps.

While there’s a slight detour in the action, with June taking Abbey to the vet and answering Sarah’s questions about MRSA (or is that the other way around? Abbey is a pretty cunning canine), I’ll recap some of the more exciting (woo) action from the past week…

The morning orientation. Of course Rex is at the hospital; I think there’s a law or something that prohibits the use of that shade of green in any environment other than a medical one. You’d think the cafeteria would be spared of having to use it…

Who is Count Morgu? My attention span, or observational skills, or something, is so short that I can’t remember the last time I found all the differences in one of Slylock Fox’s “find the six changes” puzzles. While I didn’t note that some off-center framing in a Rex Morgan strip had rendered the “County Morgue” sign on the door to “Count Morgu,” I did notice that the county health inspector/medical examiner/ coroner was a pretty creepy-looking fellow. Maybe that’s just comes with the territory, when you’re hanging around corpses and body bags and trocars. Still, the Goth chick on NCIS is pretty hot, and she hangs around with all that stuff…

Anyway, someone at CC started referring to Andy as Count Morgu. And hey, in a lot of circumstances, soap comics can use all the help they can get. If it’s in the form of a vampire…cool!

A new story arc is starting with my favorite physician, and as is usually the case, these things ramp up slowly. I will have you know that I stuck in MRSA as one of June’s guesses before it was mentioned! (Yay, me – incredible Karnak abilities!)

I don’t think the scariest thing about all of this will be MRSA, but all of the damned coffee everyone is drinking, all the time.

Sometimes there’s a story line that is just too snarkable to pass up. And sometimes, it’s a single illustration that begs for it. This drawing of Niki is a prime example.
