Mark your calendars and set your alarm clocks!

(Not to be confused with All Souls’ Day on November 2, which is sorta like a religious Festivus, for the Rest of Us.)

Time to reach into the old comic strip stash and come up with a Mass card for the Comics Hagiography:

I guess one of these days I’ll have to come up with a male saint.  Suggestions are cheerfully entertained (and no, Sam Driver, Mark Trail, and Rex Morgan cannot be considered “virgin saints.”  No.).

Whew!  A lot of action! A lot of polyester! What more can I say?

Oh, my goodness! I just discovered (thanks to Gold-Digging Nanny from CC) that I’ve never posted Charterstone Fashion Quarterly Whenever, a guide to the sartorial splendors that all of those fabulous Santa Royale fashionistas are wearing! Yes, I know, you’re probably asking yourself, “How did I manage without this knowledge?”. You most likely managed very well.

Nevertheless, I’ll stick ’em up here. Bear in mind that this past Spring and Summer have also given us a bounty: Mary’s daring romper! Mary’s Pablo Cruise concert t-shirt! Toby’s “two hearts as one” pull-over! It might be time to pull together another installment…

I don’t know if this is going to develop into an irregular canonization of various and sundry comic characters, but dang! Mary Worth sure has a knack for interior design that allows even a simple mirror to elevate her to saintly status.

For the moment, enjoy one saint Mass card.

And, wouldn’t you know it, saints do pop up from time to time. (No, Mary, you’re not the only saint in the ocean…or sea…or heaven…whatever.)

Wow, Mary’s not the only venerable person in her strip.  Of course, she’s the only saint material, but Dr. Adrian Cory, Jeff’s daughter, Drew’s sister, and a doctor in her own right (I think she graduated from Rex Morgan’s alma mater) has her own small cult that campaigns vigorously for her canonization.  After all, how many virgin saints do you see these days?

Gah! There’s MRSA running rampant, along with a scary terrorist-with-nails-to-literally-die-for, and here I am, feeling obligated to publish public service announcements. OTOH, helping folks prevent having their retinas burned to a crisp is probably a Good Thing, too.

…that’s Meddle, if you’re Mary Worth, by the way.

This was an ongoing work-in-progress, mostly a way of showcasing some of the fine (and really, really funny, in some cases) portraiture that gets drawn and tossed after one reading in the daily strips. It was always going to have the theme of DMV license photos, but again, with Earth Day upon us (hey, if it weren’t important, places like Wal-Mart ‘n’ Macy’s wouldn’t tell us it is, right?), it seemed like a good time to post it.

I’d say that at least 80% of the syndicated cartoonists did an Earth Day strip today (22 April). Some were seamless (Mutts is doing a sweet Earth Week series), some are clunky, and some like Judge Parker and Rex Morgan, gave the staff the day off and posted what looked like bumper stickers. How lame!

This is my effort to at least remedy the JP short-cut.

Whups! It’s public service time here in the Snark Cave (or in the basement). When will people learn? When will children learn? When will bouncy little puppies learn? Don’t make it so Mark Trail has to punch some common sense into you!

Loramir from CC brought up an interesting point: several characters in several soapy comic strips share the same name.

It’s not like there’s a chance that we’re going to run out of “normal” names anytime soon. And evidently there’s a trend, at least in the U.S., of giving companion animals “human names” rather than traditional names like Fido or Fluffy or Getthehelloffofthat. I don’t know why…I asked a fellow who owned a dachshund, “Henry,” why he’d named the dog that: “Because pet names are stupid.” Okay. For the record, I’ve also known a dachshund by the name of “Daniel,” so maybe it’s a thing with wiener dogs.

Anyway, this is sort of a PSA/field guide to some of the potentially-confusing character names in our favorite soaps.
