When you have a Family Circus panel of li’l Jeffy staring longingly at a layer cake, saying, “Mommy, you wanna guess what I’m thinking about?”, things can go one of two ways.

You can change the picture:

To which Mommy sighs sadly and replies, “I know, honey, but you have to forget about our Labor Day picnic.  A lot of people accidentally ‘fall’ on things and then have to go to the hospital to have them removed.”

Or, you can change the caption:

Mommy only nodded and smiled to herself.  While Jeffy might be a whipping boy for Billy and other bullies for the rest of his life, he’d certainly be popular with the ladies.  It was a reasonable trade-off.

Honestly, I love Rex Morgan…it’s just that I have an odd way of showing my affection.

We laugh at them.  Coloring mallards with brown heads and green bodies (and with blue ducklings, too).  The Sunday Monkeys using a completely different palette for the same outfits a character was wearing during the daily strips.  A featured character going from brown hair to black, unintentionally (i.e., Dr. Mike in Mary Worth, not the made-over gang from Apartment 3-Gee!).

It was only a matter of time…

[Okay, so Tiffany’s jeans had a thin outer seam in the original…]

Poor Rex! Not only does he have to do his doctoring with regular patients, but he has to deal with ones who just barrel into the office without an appointment! No wonder our health system is the way it is.

Still, there’s a few moments for levity, or at least amusement at Hizzoner’s expense…
