Mark Trail is still shot in the head, still floating in a small boat out on a stormy sea, and now he’s about to wash up on a deserted beach — deserted, that is, except for a raven-haired woman.  The Comics Curmudgeon himself Josh speculates that this is a modern-day retelling of the Odyssey, with our hero marooned on the island of Calypso.  Could it be?

I tend to doubt it, as Odysseus was a smart fellow, the guy who suggested the building of the Trojan horse, which ultimately destroyed Troy.  What could Mark possibly come up with that might remotely compare?

CC’s Sequitur’s suggestion was a natural (just like pure maple syrup):

And not to be outdone, CC’s Effluvius Erratus gives Mark his Homeric due (d’oh!):

Sing, o muse, of the man of wood and wild,
Oak-fisted and subtle as a bullet to the head,
Who speaks his thoughts for all to hear
And wonder at his phrasing weirdly bold,
Who aftering ravaging Cherry’s well-stacked
Tow’ring pancakes, wandered far and wide,
Bidden by the God of Plots to seek
The secrets of the Cravated Smith, whose
Diamond lures in which secrets wait.
Sing, muse, o sing of Kelly Welly
Brain of jelly, sent by dread god Elrod,
To foil and finagle the Man of Wood…

It is all too, too wonderful!

I LOATHE Kelly Welly.  I’ll even follow the misadventures of Rusty the Little Mutant Boy and his Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Puppy Sassy, but throw in a dame who has all the infuriating features of Lucy Ricardo, and I just want to punch her.

Saayyyyyyyy, there’s an idea!

You know, I wouldn’t even mind her so much if she’d admit that she’s a numbskull…

I thought I was all inspired with a Mark Trail/Mary Worth mashup…and I just seized up.  I think the cold weather (17 F as the low — in TUCSON! — the past two mornings) have frostbitten my snark.

Feel free to have at this.  Maybe I’ll choose a few good ‘uns and insert them — we can be the new Moy and Giella/Nolan and Wilson/Batiuik and Johnston of the snark pages!

Great Googly Moogly! Folks have stepped up to the challenge!  Faithful reader (yay!) Rimpy has a rather horror genre feel to it:

Ned Ryerson offers one that even Tobey Cameron can puzzle out:

Red Greenback always knows what to say. Too bad Mary doesn’t (not that it stops her, mind you):

And Écureuil Écumant’s offering harkens back to a Sunday Mark Trail, in which Mark extols the economic and commercial value of ganja hemp:

Really, I don’t know what to expect from HAMMY THE SQUIRREL!, but I have to admit that this doesn’t surprise me (and it makes me laugh, too):

THANKS to all the folks who helped Mark, Mary and Jeff have their say!

This all started with a Washington Post article about the difficulties of breeding giant pandas in capitivity, and the extreme measures being used to help them succeed:  panda porn, sexy panda sounds, and training the females to straddle a log so as not to be squished by their bulky paramours.

Wouldn’t this be so much easier to just call the Nature Guy himself, Mark Trail?  The Comics Curmudgeon’s own queek found an oldskool Sunday Mark Trail featuring pandas — there might be a clue!   http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-H-t-Wz1VNU/TKHhEHDNaTI/AAAAAAAAMDk/OyKZkgWHpYc/s1600/EdDodd_MarkTrail_Panda_100.jpg

Alas not.  Perhaps Mark could address the problem with a new column!

Then again, Mark’s kid is adopted.

Mark’s wife is ignored.

Mark’s closest and bestest buddy is a St. Bernard dog.

Just a hunch, but maybe the World Wildlife Fund ought to consider Mark for its new logo…

Mark Trail has been literally going around in circles in a small boat, trying to get the drop on a diamond smuggler.  Glaciers move faster than his investigation, and everyone at Sea Breeze Fishing Camp is threatened with being iced in if the plot doesn’t start picking up the pace.

CC’s [Old Man] Muffaroo has a brilliant idea of bringing in an incisive mind like Dick Tracy to help Mark — yeah, well, good luck with that!

So the 23 December Pibgorn strip concludes a few days of Santa hearing mysterious sleigh bells and running to it in a panic, only to find Dasher and Dancer going at it.  (In the words of Dave Barry, “No, I am not making this up.”)

Mark and I do our best to salvage the situation with a mid-week Nature Study.  Enjoy Nature!

We must’ve been very good this year.  Or very bad.

Loads of thanks to CC’s The Ghost of Jarrod for the great idea and lots of the dialog!
